For its annual management meeting, Vinda Group — the third largest tissue company in China, which is the world’s second largest tissue market — and its gamification consultant, Talent Intelligence, tapped SelfDrvn to power and engage attendees before and during the conference. The SelfDrvn app included several attendee engagement features, including a crowd favorite, Stepathon, which allowed the participants to compete with each other for points and a place on the in-app leaderboard.

At the Vinda Group Management Offsite Meeting in January 2017, Faye Yong, the Marketing Director, pointed out that the app allowed organizers to send all communication through the app rather than by emails. She also commended the point system noting that it was one of the main attractions in the conference app.

Other attendees highlighted the News Feed, Poll and Message-in-a-Bottle (a digital feedback system that allowed the organizers request for feedback from attendees). Fernando Spinelli, Director, said that “It is great that event attendees can take surveys in the app,” noting, however, that most attendees had not fully utilized the app yet.

Clear Goals

To enjoy all the benefits of event engagement and gamification, event organizers must have a clear goal that they want to achieve. It also helps to have a list and structure of what event attendees must do and accomplish to acquire points and rewards. In this case, Vinda’s goal was to increase participation and communication in the meeting topics, generate more ideas across different functions of the organization, and retain the company’s values among the management group.

Attendees at Vinda’s management meeting gained points and rewards by correctly answering poll questions on the SelfDrvn News Feed and out-walking other attendees in Stepathon — features that many participants enjoyed immensely!

“The point system is great! You get gratification and rewards for activities that you did and it was exciting. That was good and important to me,” Benny Wong, Commercial Director, said at the meeting. He added that the points are beneficial to his team as it provides automatic monitoring via the leaderboard.
